  5.     Its tail twitches and its head turns. It has antlers, a soft
  6. coat, innocent eyes -- and a heart of steel. Meet RoboDeer, the
  7. radio-controlled decoy buck. West Virginia's department of
  8. natural resources has sent the dummy deer into the bush just
  9. twice -- but that was enough to ensnare 11 illegal highway
  10. hunters. "We try to place it where an individual would be
  11. looking for a deer," says DNR Sergeant Kaven Ransom.

  13.     RoboDeer is the pet creation of Pete McCuskey, owner of
  14. Mountain Security Specialties, who watched hours of deer videos
  15. to learn and duplicate genuine buck motions. "We strove for the
  16. most natural movement," he boasts.

  18.     RoboDeer does have some defects. His head has blown a fuse
  19. or two, and his hide has been perforated by bullets. But while
  20. the DNR readily displays the deer, it insists on keeping one
  21. detail absolutely secret: the location of its motor. DNR's
  22. Ransom would say only, "It is in an area that typically would
  23. not be shot at."
